The method

Prep built on how memory actually works

Cramming feels productive and fades by exam day. NextRank is built on three findings cognitive science has confirmed for decades, and each one is a feature you use, not a slogan.

Active recall

Learn by retrieving, not re-reading

Every session is retrieval practice. Quizzes and flashcards ask you to pull the answer from memory before you see it, because the effort of recalling is where durable memory gets built.

Try to recall, then flip. Answer, then read the rationale and the policy citation.

The testing effect: being tested on material helps you remember it better than restudying.

Spaced repetition

Review each card right before you forget it

Flashcards are scheduled by a spaced-repetition algorithm (SM-2). Cards you find easy come back further apart, and the ones you miss come back soon, so your study time lands where it actually moves the needle.

Grade each card “Got it” or “Review again,” and the schedule adapts from there.

The spacing effect: memory lasts longer when review is spread out over time.

Measured difficulty & mastery

Difficulty measured from real performance

Question difficulty is measured from how real candidates actually perform, not guessed by an author. And your mastery is tracked chapter by chapter, so you can see exactly which topics you own and which still need work.

Per-topic mastery flags a chapter as weak until you’re consistently getting it right.

Mastery-based learning: advance through topics as you show you’ve learned them.

Practice like the exam

You don’t just study. You take the exam.

Getting tested is how the material actually sticks. You answer real exam-format questions under exam conditions, then see exactly why the right answer is right.

  • Similar multiple-choice format you’ll face on exam day
  • The rationale and the case or policy citation behind every answer
  • Fully timed mock exams to rehearse the real thing before it counts

Know when you’re ready

A readiness score that tells you the truth

Most prep leaves you guessing whether you’ve done enough. NextRank combines four signals into a single Readiness score and shows you the trend over time, so “I think I’m ready” becomes something you can actually see.

Accuracy

40%

How well you’re answering, weighted toward your recent work.

Retention

25%

How much of what you’ve learned is still sticking from your flashcard reviews.

Coverage

20%

How many of your exam’s topics you’ve reached proficiency on.

Pace

15%

Whether you’re on track for your exam date.

Together they roll up into one score from 0 to 100:

Building · under 50On Track · 50 to 74Exam Ready · 75+

Readiness reflects your preparation, not a predicted exam result. It’s a measure of the work you’ve put in, updated every time you study.

Is NextRank available yet?

We’re launching soon on iPhone, with Android coming soon after. Join the waitlist and you’ll be among the first to know when it goes live.

Which exams does it cover?

Two kinds: state certification exams (law enforcement is live in Florida with more states rolling out, and corrections and fire coming soon) and agency promotional exams by rank, from Corporal up through the senior ranks depending on your agency. We’re adding states, disciplines, and agencies continually.

What makes this different from a study guide or a stack of flashcards?

NextRank is built on the study methods cognitive science has repeatedly shown work, namely active recall and spaced repetition, and wraps them in a readiness score that shows when you’re actually prepared. It’s the difference between cramming and remembering it on exam day.

What’s included?

Written practice and quizzes, spaced-repetition flashcards, full-length mock exams, and a readiness score, plus streaks, daily goals, and leagues to keep you consistent. Oral Board practice and JST scenario judgment are coming soon.

Will it guarantee I pass?

No, and be skeptical of anything that claims to. What we can promise is better preparation through proven methods: content built to your exam, practice scheduled the way memory actually works, and an honest readout of where you stand.

What’s the readiness score, exactly?

A single 0 to 100 number combining four things: your accuracy, how much you’re retaining, how much of the exam you’ve covered, and whether you’re on pace for your date. It reflects the work you’ve put in. It is not a prediction of your exam result.
